Qualcomm Snapragon 810-powered Project Tango smartphone coming in Q3 2015

Qualcomm Project Tango
At the Google I/O 2015 yesterday, Google announced its partnership with Qualcomm for its next generation Project Tango smartphone development platform. Project Tango combines the camera, gyroscope, and accelerometer to estimate six degree of freedom motion tracking, providing developers the ability to track 3D motion of a device while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. We still don’t have the complete specifications of the smartphone.
The processor supports hardware tessellation, geometry shaders and programmable blending, as well as advanced GPU security for secure composition and management of premium video and other multimedia. dual 14-bit Image Signal Processors (ISP) with fast autofocus, depth sensing, and advanced imaging software that helps enable advanced camera features particularly in low light environments.
Qualcomm-powered Tango smartphone will let you access Qualcomm Hexagon DSP via the Hexagon SDK as well as the Qualcomm Vuforia mobile vision platform, said the company. Google’s Project Tango tablet powered by Nvidia Tegra K1 processor that was introduced last year went on sale without invitation for all at US$512.
The Project Tango smartphone developer platform will be available for purchase sometime in Q3 2015, but still no details about the price. You can register your interest on the Qualcomm developer’s websiteto get notified once it is available.

Missed something at Google I/O 2015? Re-watch the full keynote here!

While the first day of Google I/O 2015 is just coming to an end, there’s still another full day ahead of us. Google went through a lot of announcements today, and it can be really easy to miss out on some of the most important info. If you’d like to re-live the experience, the full keynote from I/O 2015 has just been posted on YouTube. The video is attached below, so be sure to take a look if you missed out on something!
Of course, you don’t need to watch the entire presentation again, because we’re here. Diving into M: Multi-window option can be enabled with some work!

multi-window
Back in March we first reported on how multi-window functionality had been discovered in an Android code commit. While many custom ROMs and OEM skins have had multi-window capabilities for a while, stock Android fans have been long been waiting for such a feature. The good news is that Android M does in fact carry such a function!
Before you get too excited, there’s some bad news, too. First, this is an EXTREMELY early, experimental function. It’s so experimental that you can’t just turn it on in developer options, you first have to edit your build.prop to change user type to “userdebug” before the feature even shows up in dev options.
multi-window-2
As you can see in the screenshots at the top of the page, the multi-window mode gives you the power to show two windows side-by-side. You control this functionality through the recent menu by clicking on a new icon that shows up to the left of the (X). Once you do that, you’ll be asked to select the task’s layout. Although the feature seems a bit clunky, it works just fine as far as I can tell and I’ve had no problems with crashing or other issues while playing around with it. I’m currently testing this on a Nexus 5 though, and so it’s a bit cramped, but obviously such a feature is a much better fit for tablets or big-screen phones.
Multi-window is certainly one of the things we’ve long been asking for, but considering the hoops that must be crossed to turn this on, we wouldn’t bet on this coming to Android M as a stable (non-dev) feature. Then again, you never know. What do you think of Android M’s new multi-window function? Let me know in the comments.

Diving into M: Android M lets you move apps to microSD thanks to “adoptable” storage

samsung-galaxy-fame-microsd
Google is famously uninterested in giving proper support for microSD, but it looks like the Android team is having a slight change of heart.
One of the many new features that Google didn’t really advertise about Android M yesterday is Adoptable Storage Devices. Adoptable basically means that Android M can “adopt” an external storage device like a microSD card and format and encrypt it so it acts like the device’s internal storage. It looks like Google no longer sees microSD as for storing media only; with adoptable storage, you will be able to move apps and their data to microSD or other external storage devices. The caveat is you won’t be able to use an adopted card on other devices, because of the encryption. But that’s a small sacrifice given the benefits.
The ability to move apps between internal and external storage is a feature that many OEMs added to their devices years ago. Now Google is building it into stock Android, despite the fact that there are no Nexus devices with microSD ports. This is another Android M feature that has been popularized by OEMs and that Google now includes into stock Android, withfingerprint sensor support, themes, customizable quick settings tiles, being other examples. It remains to be seen whether this is a sign of something bigger (from the Nexus line, only the original Nexus One supported microSD) or just a fluke.
Besides adoptable storage, a related improvement is better support for OTG USB. Now when you connect a USB OTG flash drive, a popup will let you browse the contents immediately, without having to use a file explorer.

Android M rumored to bring dedicated app permission controls

The next major iteration of Android will reportedly bring dedicated permission controls to users. Android M is expected to debut tomorrow during Google I/O in San Francisco.
Currently, Android prompts users to accept all permissions an application requires before installing it. In Android M, permission controls will reportedly be accessed and modified within the app, or by going to the device’s settings menu.
There is no word on how will an application behave with denied permissions. We reckon that members of the Android team at Google will elaborate on the subject tomorrow.
In addition to bringing app permission controls to users, Android M is also rumored to focus on optimizing RAM and battery performance. A dedicated update support cycle for devices is also expected with the new OS release.

Motorola is apparently readying two QHD flagships

Get Ready Rich People/.!!!!!!!
motorola_1440p_leak_1
Apparently, Motorola is working on two new devices and both the devices are equipped with QHD screen ie a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. The devices are currently being tested under the Verizon network in USA.
The first device with model number XT1578 (Verizon) and XT1097 (Retus) is codenamed Clark and apparently Motorola is recycling the model numbers of old phones such as the Moto X 2nd Gen to keep the details from leaking into the public. Clark has a 5.25″ display with QHD resolution and will be powered by the hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor. That means the device has a pizel density of 560 ppi.
motorola_1440p_leak_2
The second device with model number XT1585 (Verizon) is codenamed Kinzie. It also has a QHD resolution but a much smaller screen size of 4.6″ which means its pixel density is a whopping 640 ppi which has never before been launched on a phone. It is definitely unnecessary for a display that is that small. The device will be powered by the octa-core Snapdragon 810 chipset.
Both the devices are currently running on Android 5.1.1 during testing but may get a newer version based on when they actually do get launched. Not much else is known about the two devices but we will keep you updated.

OnePlus is planning to “shake up the tech industry” on June 1

Once again, OnePlus is teasing something via its official Twitter account. This time it looks like we’re going to see a new announcement from the Chinese company on June 1, which is next Monday.
Obviously no big clues as to what that will be are given, but as you can see from the accompanying image OnePlus is talking the big talk.
So whatever happens on June 1, expect the tech industry to be shaken up about it. The teaser does imply something about OnePlus going back to the drawing board, so to speak, so this might be something related to its next smartphone. Perhaps we’ll hear the first detail(s) about it on Monday.
Then again, keep in mind that OnePlus likes to release such teasers quite a lot, sometimes for new accessories, other times just for a change in its sales method. On the other hand, the OnePlus 2 is going to arrive in Q3. The beginning of that quarter is on July 1, so an announcement in June wouldn’t be out of the ordinary. Hang tight and we’ll see what happens.

New Opera Max version will save you from crowded hotspots, battery hogs

Opera’s headlining trick – compressing the web – is evolving in the time of high-powered smartphones. Opera Max enables a Turbo-like compression for any and all apps on your phone, not just the browser. And now not just mobile data either, Max can now handle your Wi-Fi usage.
“Why?” you may be asking. Simple – public Wi-Fi hotspots often suck worse than mobile data. Also, this allows Opera Max to improve your battery life too.
The new version of the app can take over Wi-Fi communication and channel it through Opera’s compression servers, just like it does for mobile data. This can be disabled if you like, but crowded hotspots at cafes and airports may make you reconsider.
Being in charge of all Internet connection lets Opera Max selectively block apps. You can allow apps to use mobile data, just Wi-Fi data or none at all. This way you can stop apps that keep draining your battery with constant Internet connections in the background.
If you haven’t already you can download Opera Max from the Play Store. Check out this article if you have any questions about the setup.

Xiaomi Mi Band can now sync with Google Fit

Xiaomi’s Mi Fit app has just received a new update. The fitness tracker, specifically designed to work with the company’s inexpensive Mi Band tracker, now has integration with Google’s Fit platform.
This definitely simplifies data tracking on most Android devices. Up until now, the Android Mi Fit app was mostly closed off from data exchange, which is kind of odd, considering the company’s iOS application already has integration with Healthkit. Now, using the Google Fit API, your Mi Band, or rather Mi Fit, can feed information into Google’s platform, so, you can use both without dealing with the hustle of conflicting data.
The new Mi Fit update, version 1.4.923 also brings about numerous UI improvements and bug fixes. It can be picked up from the Google Play store. It is also worth noting, that the Xiaomi community has also developed and is supporting a modified version of the Mi Fit app, which has the ability to relay third-party app notifications toy your band. It is still stuck on v.1.3.912, but, we can only assume that the Google Fit integration will carry over to the custom app as well, sooner or later.

Google might not release a Nexus Tablet this year – May launch two Nexus smartphones

Google Nexus 9-02
According to a new rumor that has surfaced, Google is not planning to launch a new Nexus tablet this year however it might go on to introduce two new Nexus smartphones. The devices will be made by LG and Huawei and are codenamed Angler and Bullhead respectively.
The LG Angler will reportedly be a 5.2″ device that will be sort of a Nexus 5 (2015) edition. LG is apparently planning to equip the device with the hexa-core Snapdragon 808 that they used in the LG G4. The phone is likely to have a battery capacity of 2700 mAH but it hasn’t been confirmed yet.
The Huawei Bullhead will be a larger device with a 5.7″ screen and it seems that Huawei is planning to use the Snapdragon 810 processor in it. We aren’t sure if they have worked out all the issues that the processor has but we hope that they certainly have. The phone is said to pack a 3500 mAH battery and will have similar specifications to the Nexus 6 but in a smaller, easier to handle form factor. This means that the phone should also have a 1440p display just like the Nexus 6 as well.
Both the devices are rumored to be launched sometime during October this year and are expected to come pre-loaded with the upcoming Android M OS.

Qualcomm and Daimler announce collaboration to bring connected car technology

qualcomm_daimler
Qualcomm has partnered with automaker Daimler to bring new connected car technology. The collaboration will be aimed at improving in car experiences by implementing 3G/4G connectivity, in-vehicle wireless charging and Qualcomm Halo WEVC (Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging) technology.
Daimler AG is an automotive MNC that is most famously known for its Mercedes Benz brand. They will collaborate together with Qualcomm to bring Wireless Power Transfer 2.0 to vehicles. Qualcomm Halo technology will allow companies to fit high performance and high power into a small package that will enable customers to charge their electric and Hybrid cars without having to plug them into a charging socket.
We aren’t sure how exactly that would work. perhaps the car will have a particular charging adapter or will have to be parked upon an inductive floor material but it does sound interesting and we are looking forward to seeing what they bring. Also Qualcomm’s WiPower technology will allow users to charge their devices wirelessly in their cars. As wireless charging is slowly gaining momentum, it would be a neat feature to have in your car as well and we hope that more automakers adopt the technology very soon.

Android M might come with update guarantees for Nexus devices

Google Nexus 6_fonearena-010
Google is rumored to be announcing the next version of Android called M at the I/O which is happening in San Francisco on the 28th of May and apparently it will come with an update guarantee for Nexus devices.
What this basically means that Google will assure major system updates for 2 years and security patches for 3 years on Nexus devices. Or they will provide security patches for at least 18 months from the date of purchase on the Google Store/Play Store. This rule will apparently apply to both old as well as new devices.
So this means that the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 10 might not be getting the update to Android M but will get security patches for a while longer. But devices like the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) will get Android M and will get security patches till beginning of Q3 next year.
We aren’t sure whether Google will announce Android M at I/O for sure or if they will announce this new update system either. The source might be right on this but even then take this information with a pinch of salt as changes can always be made before the announcement goes official. Whatever happens, we will keep you updated on any further information we receive regarding the same.

Motorola Moto Turbo gets minor software update in India

moto_turbo_update_may (1)
The Motorola Moto Turbo, the Indian variant of the Verizon exclusive DROID Turbo has just received a new firmware update. While the phone will still be running on Android Lollipop 5.0.2 after the update, it brings about performance and stability improvements.
The update is 16.7MB in size and updates the build number to LXG22.33-12.16. If you had read our review of the Moto Turbo, you will remember that it did have a few issues in terms of stability as it occasionally did hang up while we were using it. This update should most likely fix the issue and should also improve the performance.
moto_turbo_update_may (3)
Apart from that, it also fixes a rare issue that will prompt you to enter a PIN code in order to boot up the device and also might result in a audio error if you attempt to make an emergency call before entering the required PIN. The update is available OTA on Moto Turbo devices in India. While neither the Moto Turbo nor its international counterparts have received the update to Lollipop 5.1, it is said to be releasing sometime in June. At least users in India are getting to enjoy Lollipop as opposed to Moto Maxx and DROID Turbo users who are still using KitKat 4.4.4.

Need for Speed’ teaser trailer surfaces

It’s been almost two years since the last NFS game out and just in case you thought EA has given up on the series, a new one is coming this year.
So far called only Need for Speed without any other fancy suffix, the new game will feature “deep customisation, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive narrative that pulls you through the game.”
EA has released a teaser trailer for the new game and it looks pretty incredible. Best part is at the end, where it says all the footage is in-game and representative of all the versions of the game.
The game will be released later this year in fall and will be out on PS4, Xbox One, and the PC.

The Steam Machine Brings PC Games to Your Couch

At this year's PAX East show in Boston, Alienware turned a lot of heads when it showed off its forthcoming Steam Machine, a console-based PC gaming system that will launch this fall. It was coupled with the latest design of Valve's Steam Controller, and marked one of the first times the Valve Controller and Alienware Steam Machine were available for the public to demo. Lucky for us, we had a chance to go hands on with both of them.
The base model of the Alienware Steam Machine comes with an Intel Core i3 Dual-Core processor, an NVIDIA Geforce GTX with 2GB GDDR5, 4GB of RAM, and 500GB of internal storage. And don't worry: If you're worried about the lasting power of your Steam Machine, you'll be able to upgrade the CPU, memory, hard drive, and wireless cards as well.
Steam Machine
Steam Machine
A Steam Machine will let you access the Steam Library of games on your TV instead of your PC.
The purpose of the Steam Machine is to bring your PC gaming into the living room, and to compete with traditional consoles like Xbox and Playstation. There are already a host of Steam Machines from the likes of Asus and Zotac, but Alienware's venture into the space marks an ambitious leap forward for the concept.
When the Alienware Steam Machine launches this November, it will boast more than 980 game titles available from the Steam Games Library—an impressive selection for a sub-$500 system. But it isn't just a gaming machine; it can also be used to stream TV shows and movies, or play music while gaming.
Alienware's Steam Machine will launch with more than 980 game titles in its library.
At PAX East, Alienware was also showing off Valve's latest—and supposedly final—design for the Steam Controller. The Steam Machine has enough ports for four controllers, and you'll be able to mix and match controllers—including Valve's unique Steam Controller.
Unfortunately, the booth demos did not feature a version of SteamOS to check out. SteamOS is a Linux-based operating system, also developed by Valve, designed specifically to take advantage of the Steam Machine, Controller, and Game Library.
If you're already sold and want to check out what the Steam Machine can do, you actually don't have to wait until it launches this fall. The Alienware Alpha is essentially the exact same machine—even the design is similar—but it runs Windows, and is intended to serve as both a gaming system and desktop alternative. The only aesthetic difference is the Steam logo in the corner. However, when the Steam Controller and Steam OS launch in November, Alpha owners will be able to convert their systems to SteamOS if they find that operating system to be a better fit for their needs.
The only design difference between the Alienware Alpha and the Steam Machine is this logo.
Alienware's Steam Machine will come bundled with a Steam Controller and bonus game content. The entry-level model will set you back a cool $479.99. That's a heftier price tag than an Xbox One or PS4, but well within reason for any devoted PC gamer.

Cyanogen officially introduces upcoming Platform SDK

cyanogen_plastform_sdk_screenshot1_official
Cyanogen Inc, which is known to be working on a Platform SDK, has now briefed some of the feature of its upcoming addition to the open source project CyanogenMod. The SDK is currently in alpha stage, and company expects a lot to change in the future.
The Platform SDK is an open source SDK that allows developers to either use existing APIs newly presented in CyanogenMod’s own framework, or contribute their own APIs to be leveraged by any other application, notes company on its official Developer blog.
Cyanogen said that it is launching the alpha SDK by seeding it with the Quick Settings Tile API, hoping that it will inspire the developer community to think of additional APIs that can also be added to the Platform SDK. So if their app uses the Quick Settings (QST) API, then the developer will be able to quickly add a tile that toggles a particular setting in their app, essentially for on/off purpose.
For example, during a recent company hackathon, a team came up with an app called Bike O’Clock that turns your CM device into a bike computer. Bike O’Clock uses the Platform SDK by creating a quick settings tile to toggle the app’s recording of your progress as you bike on and off.
cyanogen_plastform_sdk_screenshot2_official
Furthermore, the Platform SDK enables Platform API cores to be submitted by the community, such that anybody interested in using the SDK can then take advantage of these open APIs to create apps, addsblog.

Google Maps now adds live traffic updates and alternate route options

google_maps_live_traffic
Google has just introduced live traffic updates as well as alternate route suggestions for Google Maps. Live traffic alerts will allow you to avoid traffic jams and make sure that you reach your destination on time.
As soon as you feed in your destination on Google Maps, you will get details about the traffic conditions and helps you identify the quickest route. In case there’s a traffic jam, it will notify you and let you know for approximately how long you will be stuck in the jam. You’ll get suggestions for alternative routes and will get explanations as to why a certain route is a better option than the other.
For example, Google Maps will suggest an alternative route if there’s too much of a traffic jam on one road or if there’s a construction going on along a particular route or perhaps if an accident has occurred and is causing a block. It will notify you of the causes and how much of a delay is expected then suggest better/faster ways to reach your destination.

Google’s standalone Photo sharing and storage service coming this month

googleplus_photos_app_chromewebstore
Google is reportedly set to separate its online picture sharing and storage service from Google+, and will announce it as a standalone service some time during its I/O conference later this month.
According to Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter, the new standalone Google photo service/ photo tool will let users post images to Facebook and Twitter as well. The Google I/O is scheduled for May 28 and 29 in San Francisco, and it is expected that the Search giant will make the announcement alongside anticipated Android M preview.
While Google declined to comment on the report, it was only last year in August when Bloomberg had first hinted about the possible separation of the photo tool. Also in March this year, Google’s Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai had said that the photos and social-stream features were likely to be treated as separate features.
As yet nothing is known about the service, but it is expected that the Google will enhance features of the existing Photos tool and the service will independently compete with similar popular services such as Yahoo’s Flicker and more.

Xposed Framework module GravityBox now compatible with Android 5.1 Lollipop

Android Xposed framework - installer-1-2
Developer C3C076 has just recently announced on XDA that the popular Xposed Framework module GravityBox has added compatibility for Android 5.1 Lollipop. While there’s still no official Android 5.1 release for Xposed quite yet, users can download the unofficial 5.1 port and use it in conjunction with the newest version of GravityBox.
It should be noted that the newest version of the module is missing a few small features including the omission of some signal cluster tweaks and status bar coloring. Apparently adding in these features would require a major rework due to dual SIM support introduced in Android 5.1 Lollipop. The developer has also unlinked ringer/notification control volumes, which can no longer be controlled within the phone’s sound and notification settings – only within the expanded volume panel.
This new version isn’t guaranteed to work on non-Nexus/non-GPe devices, so issues will likely be present if you try to flash it on a device that has a skin. The developer also says that folks who flash this version should try to avoid using a soft reboot, as it will most likely cause apps to rebuild from scratch every time, which could take some time. If you’re interested, head to the source link below for the download.

Galaxy S6 reportedly hit 10 million milestone in “about one month”

samsung galaxy s6 vs s6 edge aa (21 of 39)
Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that the Galaxy S6 series (S6 and S6 Edge) hit the 10 million sales milestone in “about one month” from its release. The publication cites an unnamed “high-ranking Samsung official.”
“The sales of the Galaxy S6 series have already surpassed 10 million,” according to the Samsung executive. Samsung typically trumpets such milestones, and no other Korean outlet covered the news, suggesting that this is not an official announcement. That will probably follow over the next days. The Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge started shipping on April 10 in 20 countries, and became available in markets from around the world in the weeks that followed.
Last year, Samsung boasted that it managed to sell 11 million Galaxy S5 units in the same time it needed to sell 10 million Galaxy S4 units a year before (about a month). Despite the strong start, the Galaxy S5 eventually turned out to be a disappointment, as Samsung sold 40 percent fewer units that it anticipated, according to the Wall Street Journal.
With the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, Samsung effectively rebooted the series, and the enthusiastic reception suggests the move has been successful. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the S6 will break the records set by the Galaxy S4, even if analysts think it will.
The fact is, the days of explosive growth are over in most smartphone markets (case in point, China) and the competition is much stronger now. That explains why, despite great reviews, the Galaxy S6 does not appear to be doing much better than its predecessors.

Google brings translucent status and navigation bars for Google Now

Google app has been updated with a couple of minor visual changes. Those using custom launchers will now see update that enables full screen mode for Google Now.
google update
The latest update bumps the version to v4.6 makes the status and navigation bars transparent for all users. Earlier, the status and navigation bar used to become transparent in Google Now when the Google Now Launcher was used. On third-party launchers like Nova or Apex, the status and navigation bar remained opaque/black which did not provide a seamless experience. The Search app is getting Material Deign elements throughout.

Airtel has launched its 4G LTE trails in Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam, after launching 4G trails Mumbai and Chennai last week. It is based on 1800MHz FDD-LTE band 3, which the companyacquired last year. Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam become second and third cities in the country to get Airtel’s FDD-LTE service, after Chennai. For existing Airtel customers, the company is offering a complimentary upgrade to Airtel 4G at same price as 3G.
