The first news about a project Ara release hit us last year on the first developer conference, when Eremenko mentioned that the planed release date for project Ara phones is Q1 / 2015. – Late in February 2015, we are still not a lot closer to a global release of the first modular smartphones. So what is going on at the moment?
Earlier in January 2015, we got a confirmation that the global release of project Ara phones will be postponed, but also some good News, in which Google anounced to start a test run in Puerto Rico. A lot of speculations have been around how the test run will be held, some mentioned that the phones which will be released will only support WiFi and will come without a G3 module, but this was taken of the table with the introduction of the Spiral 2 phone, which comes with the following:
- 1280 x 720 display
- dual application processors including Marvell’s PXA1928 and NVIDIA’s Tegra K1
- 5-megapixel camera
- 3G module
- Wi-Fi Module, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Initially during the project ara test release in Puerto Rico there will be 11 modules available for buyers of upgrades (LTE Module, Camera – Toshiba introduced 3 Camera modules, etc), but the amount of available Modules is supposed to reach 30 by the End of the year.
YEZZ is also blowing a loud horn, and announcing they already work on more than 100 modules, the first ones will be presented on the Mobile world congress - Barcelona March 2015. Looking forward to see what they bring for the project ara release.
Toshiba introduced 3 new camera modules: 3 Mega pixel front camera, a 5 and 13 Mega Pixel back camera module, the MWC is coming, and Google is launching a test. Let us keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
