Microsoft shares new Windows 10 design for phones

Microsoft made a bunch of announcements such as the Microsoft Edge, Windows Universal Platform,Continuum, and more at the BUILD 2015 conference. While the conference was mostly about desktop platform, Joe Belfoire, VP for Operating Systems Group promised to share more about Windows 10 for phones.
Now Microsoft shared a quick look at the upcoming design changes in the user interface with the Windows 10 for phones. The new design language has been created for more flexible controls – in Microsoft terms “Adaptive UX”.
Most noteworthy change is the famous Hamburger menu used widely across Android and iOS platform based apps. In a way, the Hamburger menu implementation in the Outlook will remind you of hundreds of Android apps using the same functionality.
Landscape view will be integrated in the Calendar app along with the month view along with time-wise break down on phones with larger screens. People menu got tweaked as well and the company is still taking feedback on the Task switching options.

Google Play Services version 7.3 lets you connect multiple wearables to your phone and more

The latest Google Play Services update, version 7.3, brings a ton of awesome functionality to your Android device, including ways to use multiple wearables at once, new fitness display options for Google Fit and much more.
Most notably, version 7.3 allows you to connect multiple wearable devices to your smartphone at the same time. Google has introduced new Channel and Capability APIs, which allow developers to more easily handle messages and connections between two devices, as well as control where certain data goes.
Google Fit is also getting a few new enhancements, making it easier for other applications to display up-to-date information they get from Google Fit. Google goes on to say:
Google Fit is also augmenting its existing data types with granular nutrition information, including protein, fat, cholesterol, and more. By leveraging these details about the user’s diet, developers can help users stay more informed about their health and fitness.

T-Mobile added 1.8 million new customers to its network in Q1 2015

T-Mobile released its 1st quarter 2015 results earlier today, showing a ton of growth in the number of postpaid customers and record low postpaid phone churn. Just in the first three months of the year alone, the carrier gained 1.8 million subscribers, marking this the 8th consecutive quarter the company gained over 1 million customers. The company has also added 1.1 million branded postpaid net adds, making this the 3rd consecutive quarter adding over 1 million. Roughly 1 million of those customers were phone customers.
T-Mobile has also vastly improved its postpaid phone churn, achieving an all-time record low of 1.3%. This means that over the past year, less and less customers have jumped ship to go to another carrier. CEO John Legere explains:
We’ve had eight consecutive quarters with more than one million total net customer additions proving that customers want value. We expect to once again capture all of the industry’s postpaid phone growth in Q1 and we’ve done it while delivering an all-time record low 1.3% churn.
Assuming the number of Sprint subscribers doesn't surpass .8 million for Q1, T-Mobile will finally take the crown as the third largest mobile carrier in the U.S.
T-Mobile now has a total of 56.8 million customers. It sold a total of 8.8 million products this quarter, 8 million of which were phones.
Quarter over quarter revenue is down .9%, mainly due to the impact of the Un-carrier’s Data Stash program. However, if we were to take out the impact of Data Stash, service revenues in the first quarter rose .9%, and 11% year over year.
While T-Mobile added more than 1 million postpaid subscribers this quarter, Verizon posted a loss of 138,000 subscribers and AT&T posted a loss of 300,000. Sprint started the quarter with just under 56 million overall subscribers, so assuming that it stays under that amount, T-Mobile will finally get to take the crown as the third largest mobile carrier in the United States.
We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we hear anything from Sprint. And be sure to check out the source link below for more information on how T-Mobile did this quarter.

sony_xperia_p2_leaked_compared_xperia_z4_via_cnbeta
Sony is looking to revive its old ‘P’ series again with the new Xperia P2, suggests latest leak out from China.
The alleged Sony Xperia P2, according to Chinese blog Cnbeta, will sport almost similar specifications as the new flagship Sony Xperia Z4. The purported specifications listed by the blog include a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display, a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC clocked at 1.9GHz, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, 12.1-megapixel and 5.1-megapixel cameras, massive 4240mAh battery, and 137.3×67.2×8.9-10.9mm dimensions.
Sony will reportedly use the Exmor RS sensor borrowed from Sony Xperia Z1 and Sony G OSS lens, which enables optical image stabilization. The lens is said to be a wide-angle 25mm lens with f/2.0 aperture and will also be able to capture 4K videos. There camera flash sits below the camera will be a dual-LED flash.
Coming to the design, Sony is likely to follow the same design language as it was with Xperia P, and also seen with Xperia U. The 5.2-inch full-HD display, as seen from the purported image compared with Xperia Z4, is more edge-to-edge to make the smartphone more compact than the Xperia Z4. The thin (4.2mm) transparent band below the display may feature the colourful LED lighting for notifications, as seen with Xperia U.

Google Glass version 2.0 said to be coming soon, version 3.0 being planned

Just over a month after chairman Eric Schmidt made it clear that Google isn’t giving up on Google Glass, Massimo Vian, CEO of Italian eyewear manufacturer Luxottica, has said that the next iteration of the high-tech eyewear is coming out soon.
Speaking at the company’s general meeting in Milan, Italy, Vian also revealed that while the version 2.0 is currently being worked on, version 3.0 is also in the planning stages. “In Google, there are some second thoughts on how to interpret version 3 [of the eyewear],” he said. “What you saw was version 1. We’re now working on version 2, which is in preparation.”
It was also announced that the partnership between the two companies is going ahead. For those who aren’t in the know, Luxottica entered into a deal with Google last year to design and market fashionable Glass devices.

BitTorrent reduces US workforce, lays off 40 out of 150 employees

BitTorrent, the company behind the technology of the same name that allows for peer-to-peer transfer of files, has laid off a significant number of its employees in the US, according to a Buzzfeed report.
As per the report, the company has sacked about 40 of its approximately 150 domestic employees. Those who were laid off said the step was taken as BitTorrent is streamlining its resources to focus more on Sync, a cloud storage service based on the company’s peer-to-peer file-sharing technology.
When reached out for a comment, a company spokesperson said, “We’ve recently realigned resources based on a regular evaluation of the business. Regrettably, this did include some employee departures. The business however, remains healthy, profitable and growing.” The news comes less than a year after BitTorrent unveiled a serverless messaging platform dubbed Bleep.

Google Nexus 7 2013 permanently discontinued

Nexus-7-2013-LTE-unboxing-11
Google has permanently discontinued the Asus-made Google Nexus 7 (2013) tablet.
First launched in July 2013, the second generation of Nexus 7 tablets listed on official Google Store (store.google.com) are “no longer available for purchase.”
Apart from stating discontinuation on official store, Google hasn’t released any press statement about the same. Notably, the Nexus 7 (2013) tablets are still available via various third-party online retailers. So if you are looking to purchase one, there will not be any problem anytime soon.
Previously, Google had discontinued the popular Nexus 5 smartphone across the globe. At present, the Google Store is only selling the latest Nexus 6 flagship smartphone and Nexus 9 tablets.

A giant Android pees on Apple in Google Maps

android apple
Update: Google has issued a statement to The Washington Post, apologizing for the now-removed image of a bugdroid peeing on an Apple logo in Google Maps. Google spokesperson Mara Harris says:
We’re sorry for this inappropriate user-created content; we’re working to remove it quickly. We also learn from these issues, and we’re constantly improving how we detect, prevent, and handle bad edits
Go to this location in Google Maps.
We’re not sure what’s going on here, as what you see in the screenshot above should never make it to production software. No matter what happened (intentional Easter Egg, joke of rogue employee, some exploit or hack, passive aggressive revenge over Apple dumping Google Maps, or most likely a Google Map Maker submission that wasn’t vetted), it will probably be gone very soon.

Google posts Q1 2015 earnings, revenue up 12% year over year

Google logo aa
Just yesterday, Google posted its financial reports for Q1 2015. While overall revenue and net income increased year over year, those numbers would have been much higher had the company’s Nexus program not seen a decline. But before we get into the bad news, let’s talk about the profits Google earned from January through March of this year.
Google earned $17.3 billion this quarter, up 12% from what the company earned Q1 of last year. Net income for Q1 has also risen to $3.58 billion, up from $3.45 billion the year prior. Sites owned by Google generated $11.9 billion, an increase of 14% year over year, making up roughly 68% of the company’s overall revenue.
The always vague ‘other revenues’ portion totaled $1.7 billion in Q1, up 23% year over year, making up roughly 9.8% of its overall earnings. This section includes highly-profitable products on the consumer end, like Google Play and the Nexus program. Oddly enough, the company’s ‘other revenues’ section is down 3% compared to Q4 of 2014, and we have a pretty good idea as to why. As Google CFO Patrick Pichette explained in the Q1 2015 earnings call yesterday, the ‘other revenues’ section declined due to the Nexus program. Pichette explains:
Other revenues grew 23 percent year over year to $1.8 billion, and was down 2 percent quarter over quarter, driven really by year over year growth in the Play Store, offset by decline in Nexus. Year over year it hasn’t been as strong given the strength of the Nexus 7 last year.
As you probably recall, Google released the Nexus 6 ($649) and Nexus 9 ($399) at higher price points than it did with the Nexus 5 ($349) back in 2013. Taking into account that the Nexus 6 launched at a higher price point and is definitely a device meant for a niche market, we’re not surprised that the Nexus program has been losing its steam over the past few months.

Mortal Kombat X fights its way onto Google Play

mortal-kombat-x

Ever since its debut in 1992, the Mortal Kombat series has been known for its cutting-edge graphics and intensely bloody fights. And now, the latest installment in the series has been released on Android.
This is not the first time that Warner Bros. has ventured into the realm of mobile gaming, with some other high-profile games including Injustice: Gods Among Us and wildly popular Heads Up!. Therefore, we expected Mortal Kombat X to be exceptional, and for the most part, there are a lot of great features.
First off, the graphics look fantastic, and are nearly console quality. All the blood and gore one would expect from a Mortal Kombat title are present, including extremely visual and graphic X-Rays and Fatalities. The game carries a ‘High Maturity’ rating, so you can be well-assured that the developers did not leave out anything. Due to this attention to detail, the game will not perform well on anything with less than 1 GB of RAM, which most devices now have.
Mortal Kombat X is free on the Google Play Store which is a huge plus, but it comes with the burden of IAPs ranging anywhere from $1.99 to $99.99. Regardless, the game has a very high rating so far and comes with the ability to earn achievements on the console version and have them unlock rewards on the mobile version. Currently the game has a prominent online experience with the ability to challenge other players and compete in groups of up to 3 players.
In all, this is a fantastic game with room to grow and improve. The positive response is promising. The only downside, is that it is currently in soft-release and not available in the US. There’s not a complete list of what countries have access at this point, but you can always click the link below and check to see if it’s available for your region. Hopefully it’s not too much longer before a wider release.

Cyanogen OS 12 rollout resumed, new build includes bug fixes and “Ok, OnePlus” hotword

Reports are coming in that Cyanogen and OnePlus have resumed the rollout of the Cyanogen 12 OTA (Lollipop) for the OnePlus One.
Following more than a few delays, the OnePlus One began receiving its much-anticipated update to Lollipop last week. However, by Monday this week, the rollout of the update was halted, ostensibly to add a new feature to the firmware, detection of the “Okay, OnePlus” hotword. Many have doubted the sanity of stopping a long-delayed rollout just to add a small new feature, and it seems that the doubters were right.
According to Cyanogen’s Steve Kondik, commenting on the OnePlus forums, the actual reason for the pause was to fix some serious bugs:
“The reasons why we stopped the initial rollout are because of a problem updating encrypted devices from 11 to 12, and a couple of bugs that we felt were critical enough to fix before continuing (mms/telephony/themes). We also had an error in our production build environment that broke voice wakeup.”
Apparently, said bugs have been fixed now, and the rollout can now resume; users who already received the initial CM 12 build (YNG1TAS0YL) will receive a small OTA for the aforementioned bugs. Users still on CM 11 will soon receive a preparatory update of about 8MB that’s mandatory for encrypted devices, followed immediately by the full CM 12 update (YNG1TAS17L).
As usual, the OTA file for the CM 12 (YNG1TAS17L) update is available for download and manual installation. You can get it from here and flash it for yourself, provided you’re on the latest version of CM11.
As for the “Okay, OnePlus” feature, once you get the update, you can activate it from Settings>Language and Input>Voice Wakeup.

Qualcomm cuts outlook for 2015 due to lost chip business

qualcomm logo mwc 2015 1
Qualcomm announced its results for Q2 of fiscal year 2015, and while chip shipments increased in the period, the outlook for the entire  year isn’t as good as Qualcomm initially hoped.
Qualcomm posted $6.9 billion in revenue (GAAP) for Q2 FY2015 (the quarter ending March 29), an 8% increase over the same quarter a year ago and a 3% decrease compared Q1 FY2015. However, operating income and net income both plummeted compared to the same periods due to two major expenses that Qualcomm incurred in Q2: a $975 million charge for resolving an anti-trust investigation in China and a $950 million payment for securing advanced manufacturing capacity at a supplier (TSMC or possibly Samsung, which is reportedly going to manufacture Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 820).
Qualcomm shipped 233 million chips in Q2 FY 2015, a 24% increase year over year. The bulk of Qualcomm’s revenues, however, comes from the licensing of its technologies to various partners; the company estimates its licensees shipped 384-388 million devices at an average selling price of $193-$199.

While we remain confident in the significant growth opportunities ahead, we are reducing our QCT outlook for fiscal 2015, primarily due to the increased impact of customer share shifts within the premium tier and a decline in our share at a large customer. In addition to our ongoing expense management initiatives, we have initiated a comprehensive review of our cost structure to identify opportunities to improve operating margins while at the same time extending our technology and product leadership positions
Steve Mollenkopf, Qualcomm CEO

Latest SwiftKey beta update brings new ‘SwiftKey Hub’ menu and small UI enhancements

Slide-out-BLOG-1-2-1024x569
The newest update to the SwiftKey beta channel will bring a ton of new improvements to the already advanced keyboard app. We already know that SwiftKey is gaining Dashlane integration to help autofill your passwords, and now the SwiftKey team has outlined a few more features that will be present in the new update.
Most notably, the keyboard is gaining a new settings and content menu called the ‘SwiftKey Hub’. Located in an easy-to-access place, the Hub is split into three different screens: Personalize, Store and Settings. The Personalize menu includes your cloud settings, SwiftKey Support and social sharing options. The Store obviously houses a number of different themes for you to choose from, and the Settings tab gives you access to… your keyboard settings.
In addition to the SwiftKey Hub, the update also brings a new layout to the Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati and Marathi languages, enabling you to type more quickly when using these keyboard layouts.
If you’re interested in checking out the latest SwiftKey beta, there are a few hoops to jump through first. Head here to join the SwiftKey beta Google Group and select “join this group”. Then head to this link to become a tester. After that, download SwiftKey beta from Google Play, and you should be all set.
If you decide to download the app, let us know how you’re liking the new improvements!

Google releases two Project Fi videos to help you check your data usage, manage calls and texts

Project Fi data
We’re sure you’ve heard the news by now – Google has launched it’s very own wireless service,Project Fi. Constantly alternating between Sprint and T-Mobile’s networks and Wi-Fi hotspots around the nation, Project Fi aims to give you a viable option if you’re not too keen on signing up with one of the Big Four. While the new wireless service offers a few great features, it can be a little difficult to understand exactly how data plans, talking and texting works on the provider. So to help customers make sense of it all, Google has released two new video guides that should provide some useful information.
The first of which is a guide to checking your data usage. The interesting thing about Project Fi is that you won’t get charged for data you don’t use, unlike most other carriers in the U.S. You pay for a certain amount of mobile data at the beginning of the month, and get reimbursed for the data you didn’t use at the end of the month. So to help folks choose the right data budget on the new service provider, they released this video:

Another neat feature Project Fi brings to the table is the ability to call and text your friends and family through Hangouts without the need to have your Nexus 6 in-hand. To do so, simply install Hangouts on your Nexus 6, sign in with your Google account attached to the Project Fi network, and make sure you’re signed in to Hangouts on any other device from which you’d like to make calls and send texts. This can get a little confusing for users, which is why Google put out this video:

Bug found in the Galaxy S5 allows hackers to clone fingerprints, researchers declare

We should all be well-aware that biometric data is among the most personal and important information we don’t want getting into the wrong hands. That’s why at this week’s RSA Conference, researchers from security firm FireEye will discuss the state of biometric security to the public. Specifically, these researchers found that, after performing a series of tests on the Samsung Galaxy S5 (among other Android devices), hackers have the opportunity to easily access biometric data before it reaches the “secure zone”, and create copies for future attacks.
Instead of focusing on breaking into the secure zone (where the biometric info is stored) to steal the information, hackers could instead steal the information straight from the fingerprint scanner. To do so, the hacker only needs to acquire user-level access and run a program through root to duplicate the information. The researchers from FireEye say that on the Galaxy S5, the malware only needs system-level access, so hackers wouldn’t need to go as deep.
Yulong Zhang, a representative from FireEye, told Forbes:
If the attacker can break the kernel, although he cannot access the fingerprint data stored in the trusted zone, he can directly read the fingerprint sensor at any time. Every time you touch the fingerprint sensor, the attacker can steal your fingerprint. You can get the data and from the data you can generate the image of your fingerprint. After that you can do whatever you want.
According to the representatives, this vulnerability does not reside in devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop and above, so they urge you to upgrade your device as soon as you can.
A Samsung representative told Forbes:
Samsung takes consumer privacy and data security very seriously. We are currently investigating FireEye’s claims.

TOSHIBA REVEALS ADDITIONAL GOOGLE “PROJECT ARA” MODULE PLANS AND REFERENCE DESIGNS

NEW TOSHIBA MODULES AND REFERENCE DESIGNS

Toshiba already introduced three functional modules on the second module developer conference in January 2015.
Shardul Kazi – Senior VP Toshiba America Electronics Component, also announced that Toshiba will continue developing additional modules and solutions for Google Project Ara, and will provide the reference designs to the public in order to facilitate module makers developments.
As promised, Toshiba recently delivered multiple reference designs, with the promise for additional Google Project Ara modules.

1. TRANSFERJET™ MODULE

Transferjet™ is a new type of close proximity wireless data transfer technology developed by Sony in 2008. The maximum physical layer transfer rate for this technology is 560 Mbit/s, which after error correction and other protocol overhead boils down to 375 Mbit/s, offering thus an extremely fast and stable peer to peer data transfer. Additional TransferJet allows MAC address based filtering of users who are allowed to establish a connection, securing your data this way from unauthorized downloads in crowded areas.

2. WI-FI® MODULE

Even though some parts of the MOSFETESD (electrostatic discharge) protection diode, and the TVS (transient-voltage suppression ) diode are still under development, the reference design provided by Toshiba for this Wi-Fi / Bluetooth module is surely valuable for any module developer working on connectivity modules.

3. CAMERA AND MEDIA BAR MODULES

Toshiba is currently showing us a total of 3 camera modules :
Descriptionfull HD 2.1 megapixel (1080p) front  module8 megapixel front / rear camera module13 megapixel high speed camera module

  • HDR – High Dynamic Range

4. DISPLAY MODULE

n interesting fact about the Toshiba Display module design is that it provides headphone connectors for users who are not going to use a specialized audio module, like the ones currently developed by Sennheiser. In compare to the Innolux modules which don’t offer this possibility. On the other hand, Innolux and Yezz are working both on E-Ink based display modules, which are nowhere mentioned by Toshiba.

TOSHIBA CAMERA MODULE FEATURES EXPLAINED

HDR - HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE

High dynamic range (HDR) imaging is a feature for capturing images that have a wide contrast range between the lightest and darkest areas. It allows a more natural-looking by stretching the dynamic range.  Toshiba’s HDR function delivers a smooth and crisp photo or video by reducing blur and false colors that are inherently produced as a result of HDR composition.

BRIGHT MODE

“Bright Mode” allows the recording of high frame rate (240 fps) Full HD video in a dark environment without loosing image quality (jumpy motion in videos). In compare to “normal mode”, bright mode delivers images with 4 times the brightness and double the frame rate.

CNR - COLOUR NOISE REDUCTION

Colour noise reduction is a feature first introduced by Toshiba in 2012. When shooting pictures in dim light, lots of tiny specks can appear. making it hard to determine the shape of the photographed object.
Toshiba CNR feature
Color noise reduction (CNR) is a feature for reducing color noise that adversely affects the visibility of an image, it incorporates a digital filter that compares images between consecutive frames and extracts only color noise artifacts. It enhances image quality without compromising the sharpness of an image.

ADDITIONAL SOLUTIONS FOR PROJECT ARA MODULES PRESENTED BY TOSHIBA ARE:

  • Solution for activity measuring module is a step forward in planing of the Project Ara future, providing a possibility for modules which works detached from the Endo, the application for such a module is mostly focused around wearable devices, such as activity monitors, smart bracelet-type watches and glasses-type devices, but will work extremely well with Google Project Ara smartphones as well.
